GREY2K USA Worldwide Report: Australian greyhound tracks depend on the killing of tens of thousands of kangaroos each year

Nonprofit Group calls for End of Greyhound Racing Industry
SYDNEY, Oct. 20, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- According to a new report from the Center for a Humane Economy (CHE), tens of thousands of kangaroos are being shot each year to provide cheap meat for the Australian greyhound racing industry.
"This is another example of how the greyhound racing industry cuts corners and prioritizes profits over animal welfare," said GREY2K USA Worldwide President and General Counsel Christine A. Dorchak. "Greyhound racing is cruel and inhumane and must end."
The CHE investigation documents, for the first time, a commercial connection between Australia's kangaroo meat trade and its greyhound racing industry. As international demand for kangaroo meat and skins has plummeted, low-cost kangaroo meat has become a major feed source for racing greyhounds. According to CHE, the number of kangaroos being shot for the greyhound racing industry could be as high as 75,000 annually, assuming a diet split between kangaroo meat and other sources.
That figure excludes tens of thousands of dependent joeys, who are killed at the hands of shooters by blunt force trauma or decapitation, or left to die of starvation or predation after their mothers are shot.
"We already had plenty of good reasons to halt greyhound racing, and now we add one more: mass shooting of native kangaroos during the night to supply bushmeat to greyhounds," said Wayne Pacelle, president of the Center for a Humane Economy. "If the mistreatment of the dogs itself was not enough to warrant reform, now the case is fortified by understanding the link between greyhound racing to the slaughter of Australia wildlife."
The report identifies Ray Borda as a key link between the two industries. Borda is a longtime greyhound breeder and owner with roughly 300 greyhounds currently racing. He is also managing director of Macro Group Australia, which controls the country's largest retail distribution network for kangaroo meat, and serves as national president of the Australian Wild Game Industry Council (AWGIC), the peak body representing the kangaroo industry.
"Across the world, greyhound trainers use cheap meat as a way to reduce costs and maximize the profit margin for each individual dog," said Dorchak. "We are grateful to our allies at the Center for a Humane Economy for shining a light on the link between the shooting of kangaroos and greyhound racing."
Greyhound racing was recently prohibited in New Zealand, Wales and Scotland. It is illegal in 44 American states, and a bill to outlaw greyhound racing nationwide recently passed the U.S. House of Representatives. In December, a bill to phase out greyhound was approved by the Tasmanian House of Assembly, by a vote of 22-11.
