Why Do WorldSkills and Shanghai Match Each Other?

The 48th WorldSkills Competition concluded in Shanghai on September 27th, bringing together around 1,400 young competitors from across the world to compete in 64 skill categories ranging from traditional trades to emerging technologies.

Hosted in Shanghai, the biennial international competition showcased not only some of the world's most highly skilled young professionals, but also how rapidly changing industries are reshaping the skills needed in the workplace.

Seven disciplines made their WorldSkills debut at this year's competition, reflecting growing demand for new skills as technologies, industries and occupations continue to evolve.

But beyond the medals and competition results, Shanghai 2026 also raised a broader question: How should vocational education keep pace with a changing world of work?

That question is particularly relevant in China, home to the world's largest vocational education system and one of the world's largest manufacturing and service economies.

SMG reporter Stephen Rancourt visited vocational schools, spoke with competitors, educators and WorldSkills officials, and explored how competition standards are entering classrooms and training workshops — and why Shanghai has become a meeting point between WorldSkills' global standards and China's rapidly evolving demand for skilled talent.
