When Disaster Strikes: What's Happening in Nepal and Xizang, China

BEIJING, Sept. 4, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- A news report from China.org.cn on the mudslide that hit Gyirong Port, Xizang, China:

When Disaster Strikes: What’s Happening in Nepal and Xizang, China

On August 26, a high-altitude glacier collapse triggered a devastating flood in Nepal, and in about seven minutes, deadly mudslides hit Gyirong Port on the China-Nepal border, in southwest China's Xizang Autonomous Region.

Several days have passed. Despite all the rescue efforts, the death toll has continued to rise, and the list of missing people has only grown longer.

In a photograph of the site, a plush rabbit covered in mud sits quietly amid the debris; it was probably still in the arms of a little child not long ago. Such is the harsh reality of natural disasters.

Following the disaster, the Chinese government wasted no time in dispatching rescue teams to the affected area. Rescuers evacuated trapped people and searched for signs of life among the boulders and debris left by the mudslide.

Wing Loong drones took turns to fly overhead, delivering uninterrupted communication support for the disaster-hit region. Local residents near Gyirong Port offered food and shelter to the displaced people.

China also provided humanitarian assistance to Nepal through multiple channels. Two batches of professional rescue teams were sent to Rasuwa, the hardest hit district, to search for survivors. Two Y-20 transport aircraft arrived in Kathmandu, carrying the first batch of 50 tons of emergency supplies, including tents, blankets, food and first-aid kits. The Chinese government also extended an emergency cash grant of 2 million US dollars to Nepal.

Hope the affected people will be safe and soon return to peaceful lives. Hope there will be no more tragedies like this.
